The Google/Andriod Phone is Coming!

Posted in culture with tags , , , , on September 16, 2008 by Alex Funk

Thank Goodness! – I have been thinking about cancelling my T-Mobile and going with the AT&T plan just to get my hands on a new iPhone but with the Google Phone coming out on HTC dream I may have a gooey alternative!  This phone is touch screen and even comes with a slide out keywboard for better typing than on an iPhone. The pics and demos I have seen so far do not dissapoint and I am looking foward to gettting rid of my Blackberry in a month or so.

Details from Techcrunch say we should expect the phone in late October which hopefully will be great timing with T-Mobile’s nation wide 3G rollout.

New Microsoft Ads are…

Posted in internet with tags , , on September 16, 2008 by Alex Funk

So there is A LOT of buzz about the new Microsoft ads featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates, and that is just the point.

They are to spark conversation! For now they don’t have a point. There are lovers and haters (a lot of haters) and everyone likes to dissect the underlying meanings of these ads but it may be a little premature to do that until we see some more from Redmond.

Haters are saying how are these ads going to sell more Vista? Well they are going to sell a lot of Vista with or without these ads. If you buy a PC its coming with Vista so unless you are a a select few demographics your new computer is going to come with Vista preloaded. It’s the OS for PCs. Now if you are a college kid you may get a Macbook, or a musician who can afford the Apple goods. If you are a tech-nerd who builds your own computers than Ubuntu is probably your OS of choice but for the rest of us sheep Vista is it.

The commercials are not advertising Vista because there is no need to (and actually there is more ephasis on the “Windows” brand than this iteration. The commercials are there crack a smile from people plopped down in front of their TV or computer screen and entertain. Maybe the commercials are even a little hint at the future with Microsoft – chewy computers that we just want to eat up – maybe the next craze in technology, just as the iPhone has done it for mobile phone devices, Microsoft may be releasing the next computer gadget that folds into your pocket or you play with on a table like Microsoft Surface. – Its the future we’ll just have to wait and see.

Cars of the Future…Today!

Posted in environment, inspiration with tags , , on July 12, 2008 by Alex Funk

I love being out in California. The weather, the people oh and not to mention the cars. If a new car has recently been released you have a good chance of seeing it here first. I saw a gorgeous Audi R8 a few months back while up in Santa Monica and more recently a Mercedes-Benz SLR down in the Gaslamp disrtict of San Diego.  These are expensive high performance vehicles that draw the attention of everyone around, but they all have something in common that makes them not as exciting as some of the newer cars being introduced later this year – they all still run on petroleum.

Southern California is home to at least three new car companies that are making a move to renewable energy – just as oil is being traded at record highs on Wall Street. These are not your Prius and Insight though and have the ability to draw eyeballs while not draining your wallet at the pump.

Carlsbad, CA is home to Aptera Motors, the most amazing car being release to the market right now – it’s Jettsons like space-age design means you’ll get 200-300 miles per gallon with the gas-electric hybrid. There is also a full electric version which means you’ll never have to stop at a gas station again!  The car is made of recycled materials and uses state of the art technology like solar panels on the roof that keep the car cool while parked in the hot sun. The best feature of all though is its price, it starts at under $30k!

One new car that’s already been released to the public in limited quantities is the Tesla Roadster – an all electric sports car that’s faster than a Porsche and has Hollywood’s elite all wanting one.  0-60 in 3.9 seconds and a equivalent of 256 miles to the gallon this baby goes fast while still being green.  All this performance does come with a steeper price though and if you manage to get yourself on the very long waiting list you’ll have to shell out $109,000 for the base price.

The third car making waves across California is from another brand new company who’s strategy is to pair style and performance while still upholding their mission to get off our dependence on foreign oil. That car company is Fisker Automotive with their first car angelically titled The Karma.  This 4-door coupe goes 0-60 in under 6 seconds and has a very efficient hybrid engine using their patented Q Drive technology. This means you can drive the first 50 miles with zero emissions and the gasoline engine will kick in after that to help charge the battery. The thinking here is most American drive under 50 miles per day under most circumstances which means if you have a short daily commute you will very rarely have to fuel the thing up with gas.  The Karma also employs solar technology on the roof to help charge the batteries when the car is parked. Don’t pull out your wallets yet thought the Fisker Karma won’t be rolling out to the public until 2010.

CNN Gets Social

Posted in internet with tags , , , on June 4, 2008 by Alex Funk

While going through my usual slurry of social media profiles I was linkbaited into an image of a car in Mexico barreling into a line of people on bicycles. The picture speaks for itself but what really caught my eye was a little red button on the bottom that said ” Mixx it.”

Social media is such a hot topic in today’s interntet marketing world. We’ve recently hired two (2) social media interns just to help us keep a handle on all thing user generated on the web. I was amazed to see a pinnacle of journalism like CNN also take a step in that direction, a step which was calculated and strategic.

From doing a little additional research I saw that CNN had entered into an agreement with Mixx.com to be the default social media news site partner. What this means is that:

  1. CNN was not as interested in digg.com
  2. CNN was smart enough not to build it’s own social networking/UGC system (see Walmart social network)
  3. Mixx had benefited from a traffic jump that topped out at nearly 1m in May as reported by Techcrunch

I’m impressed with the partnership, as I have always turned to CNN to be my trusted news source and I’m getting to appreciate Mixx more and more. Whats important is that CNN was able to realize the importance of this new medium but had the foresight to go about it the right way, instead of spending the time trying to build a community around news they looked at other options to meet their objectives – and push more of their reporters news across the web. As they have done with widgets, I am sure they will also succeed in their objectives with social media.

VW Luv

April 26th marked the 1 year anniversary of buying my first new car – a Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. Like most [young] people I’ve owned old cars all my life. Maintenance on them has just been a way of life. New transmission here, replace the shocks there, etc, etc. I’ve owned great used old cars mind you – a 1986 Honda Accord and a 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo. These are two car manufactures where you see many many relics still on the road, especially out in California where the weather is kinder to old cars.

But buying my first new car was quite an experience! By chance I went to the dealership in National City and the salesman there didn’t even try to sell me anything – he just showed me what I was interested in and let me drive the makes and models. Then with the day coming to a close there was not pressure, I basically had to ask him what the cost and monthly payments would be. He came back with an offer I couldn’t refuse, no need to haggle (I am not a haggler anyway). Included in the price was the first two service appointments (oil change, tire roations, etc). I ended up with a black Jetta Wolfsburg edition with sunroof, 16 alloys, black leathernette seats (better than leather and loved by vegetarians), power everything, MP3 jack, heated seats and much more. And the price? $20k!

When I received a letter from the salesman a year to the date thanking me again I was amazed at their level of customer service. VW is an experience company, not just a car company and it shows through their style, attention to detail and price model. And as I reflect over the the past year with my first new car the lack of additional expenditure brings a smile to my face.  Besides gasoline I have not had to shell out a single penny for maintence. That’s quite a feeling, definitely new to me, and I know know why some people do the trade in every couple of years. If you can afford of it, it’s quite a piece of mind.

Job Security

Posted in politics with tags , , on May 5, 2008 by Alex Funk

Want to know the best job to have in this recession everyone is talking about? Got a guess? How about president? Yes thats right as I drove home today thinking about the current state of affairs for America I really wondered how we got here:

  • 5 years since we invaded Iraq and still no end in sight
  • Mortgage crisis is costing millions of people their homes to foreclosure and billions lost to the banks and Wall Street.
  • Crude oil is being traded at $120 a barrel.
  • The dollar keeps getting weaker, as inflation rises.

All this and who’s doing something about it? I am not usually one to blame mind you rather I like to look for the solution out of a mess – but who is in charge of America, its people, its troupes, and the sustainable future we are all hoping for? Sadly its President Bush who has that as this prestigious job description and he’s not doing a very good job of it. The latest polls show his approval rating has fallen again this time 72% disapprove of the job he is doing. 72%!! -can you believe that, tell me how many places you have worked for or know about where you get to keep your job when 3 out of every 4 people think you are doing a shitty job? Not too many come to mind. The Presidency of the United States seems to be a pretty secure career with hundreds of thousands of people loosing their jobs.

On my way home from work everyday I pass a few people on the corner of 6th and University in Hillcrest waiving signs that say “Honk to Impeach Bush” – I have been honking lately but I don’t know if the sound of my VW’s horn really does anything to get anyone more qualified in office. If you know something a little more powerful please let me know as I am all ears.

Being Earth Conscious is so Simple

Posted in environment with tags , , , on April 29, 2008 by Alex Funk

I had a friend of mine put in an order for a pair of Simple shoes a few weeks ago. He came by this weekend to drop them off and I have to say they are a really interesting pair of kicks! I have had the pleasure of walking around with them for a few days now and I can say they are as comfortable as they are earth friendly. They are called “green toe” and for good reason. Simple states that since 2005 the Green Toe line showed us its not only possible to reduce our ecological footprint but it is our duty to do so. Here, Here! Some of the sneakers even have recycled tires for the bottom of the tread. I loved the disclaimer:

“The bottom of these shoes used to be tires that rolled around on an axle that was connected to a car. Given the inherent nature of use like this, some of the shoe bottoms (i.e. tires) are marked up a little. Sure, we buff them out and put them on the bottom of the shoes, but they still show wear. If you get them and you decide you can’t deal with the past life of that particular car tire, we’ll take them back, as long as they are in new and unworn condition.”

Here’s a description:

  • Jute uppers
  • For loafin’ around
  • Bamboo linings
  • Removable natural laytex pedbed with a cotton canvas cover
  • Layered natural crepe outsole
  • Uses water-based cements
  • 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms
  • These shoes contain latex
  • We reduced stuffing in our packaging because too much is wasteful!

And here are some shots – I got a pair of the Tyler Warren Green Toe loafs, supporting local artists is as important as supporting sustainability ; )

Feeling the need for a little inspiration? I spent some time last night (which was long overdue) browsing through the TED conference talk archive and was just amazed at the breadth of speakers they’ve had. From marketing greats like Seth Godin and Malcom Gladwell to superstars like Bono and Richard Branson the list goes on and on. There are more than 200 vids currently and I am wondering when I am going to find the time to watch them. The website has a convenient side navigation that acts as a “best of” where you can sort by most discussed or emailed talks.

Although I haven’t watched it yet I recommend Michael Pollan’s because his book, The Omnivore’s Dillema, I read last year opened my eyes to a scary state of affairs: The crash course in what happens when you break down  food using technology and then build it back up.

Check out this amazing video from Jill Bolte Taylor’s talk My Stroke of Insight
